Malaria Danger
Malaria is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease. This disease spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Five parasite species cause malaria in humans, and P. falciparum and P. vivax pose the greatest threat to human. P. falciparum is the deadliest malaria parasite and the most prevalent on the African continent. P. vivax is the dominant malaria parasite in most countries outside of sub-Saharan Africa.
The first symptoms are fever, headache and chills usually appear 10–15 days after the infective mosquito bite. It may be mild and difficult to recognize as malaria. If left untreated, malaria can progress to severe illness and death within 24 hours. Based on WHO , There were an estimated 241 million cases of malaria and the estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 627.000 in 2020.
Development of Malaria in Indonesia
Indonesia is one of many countries in Southeast Asia that still have a problem with malaria. Based on a report from the Ministry of Health in 2020, more than 190.000 cases confirmed positive malaria with 415 death in Indonesia. Most of the death cases came from Papua province with the number of deaths reaching over 300. In the 2022 to February 2022 report, 8,432 malaria cases were confirmed. This is a warning to us that malaria is still there and we need to prevent it as early as possible.
